Landlord Question and Answer Forum
Is it legal to have a lock that requires a key to open from the inside? I believe that is a fire safety issue. My tenant is asking for this type of lock but I am looking for some legal guidance. Please advise.

RE: Inside Key Lock in North Carolina
In North Carolina, a Landlord has the obligation to provide and maintain the premises in a fit and safe condition. But the state leaves alot up to the definition of this to the local level. I would contact your local fire marshall or housing or zoning office and ask them the rules on this type of lock. They should provide you with the answer you are looking for.
