Landlord Question and Answer Forum

Forum / General Property Management / Unreturned Key
A couple of kids (19 and 22) moved out and seem to think that they can keep the keys until I give back their security deposit which they are requesting this week. I told them that as soon as the last electricity bill comes in, I would return their deposit which should be this week, but I'm making several claims on their deposit, unpaid electricity, back rent, cleaning, etc. Do I change the locks and charge the lockset to the deposit too, do I write them back and explain that I need the keys back immediately and without the keys I'll be charging them for new locks? Thanks from Florida

RE: Unreturned Key
Inform them of your intentions- with a deadline to respond by. If they don't meet the deadline, charge and get new keys. Urgghh, The sour part of being a LL Good Luck
