Landlord Question and Answer Forum
I have leased my home to a family to begin Aug 1, 2009. They have not put any money down yet. I leased to home with intentions of getting married and the engagement has been called off. Legally can I tell them the home is not longer available even though they have signed the lease? I've not signed it yet nor has any money been exchanged.

RE: Can landlord back out of lease before start date?
If no money has been exchanged and no lease is signed - then there is no obligation.

What if we signed the lease, but have not taken any money?

Technnically, if the lease is signed, the a contract has been entered into and all parties are held to it. Try speaking with the tenants by giving them enough notice and perhaps they will just walk away.
