Landlord Question and Answer Forum
The possible tenant does NOT have a dog at the moment but his wife MIGHT get a dog to relief stress for her (is that a service dog?) Do I have to rent to them now that I know that the possibility exists they might get a dog? We do not have any pets in any of our rentals. We have not exchanged any money yet but I said they could have the apartment last week. Amy in Ohio

RE: No pet policy for rentals
No. Service dogs perform a function for a physically handicapped individual, not emotional. Stress relief pets do not fall under ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) protection.

You can also request the wife to get a legit letter from her doctor or mental health professional to prove that she needs the emotional support animal.
