Landlord Question and Answer Forum
I had a tenant that I had continuous problems with and she ended up leaving without paying all of her rent. Now a relative of hers wants to rent another apartment from me. I'm quite sure that I would be setting myself up for more problems. Can I legally refuse to rent to the relative based on her relation to the former trouble tenant. I live in Vermont.
Thanks,
Sharon

RE: New tenant related to previous horrible tenant
You cannot discriminate, with that being said with resources like the cousin you may want to carry out an extra through background check and if even the slightest thing sets off anything odd, simply deny them. You can refuse them for many reasons as long as it is not discriminatory.
