We rent an older single home and have for many years. Our new tenant is requesting that we update some of our electrical as there's some ungrounded outlets but not in any area close to bathroom or sinks. About 1/2 of the home is newer wire. Are we required to update this?

I have not heard of such a requirement, however you may want to ask a local attorney.

I talked to the local building inspector from my city and he said there has to be 3 grounded outlets in each room by code. Wow now to spend some money on rewiring.

Karen’s on the right track. I believe that if you ask more questions you will find out that the law you were stated ONLY applies to NEW construction. In other words, redoing a kitchen, including some wiring or replacing all the drywall/tearing out/adding walls. The law probably doesn’t apply to replacing an outlet or switch either. Check with the city again and local electrician -----Disclaimer: Since I’ve been answering a lot of questions, I thought I would make the following statement.
