Last month rent vs Security Deposit. Michigan

In Michigan it states:  A landlord cannot charge more than 1 1/2 times your monthly rent for Security Deposit.  What about last month rent?  Some information I read said they are the same.  We usually ask for first month , last month and a security deposit. Can I collect all three in Michigan ?

I am pretty sure that last months rent is only allowed to be used as last months rent, then the security deposit is used just for damages. You cannot use last months rent to cover damage and cannot use security deposit to cover last months rent.
