Landlord Question and Answer Forum
I'm creating a new lease in NY state (NOT New York City) and want to specify that the tenant requires renters insurance.
The form says: New York Assist: Landlords may not require tenants to obtain rental insurance and cannot make the failure to do so a breach of the lease.
Is this valid? I know other landlords have required this in my area.

RE: Creating a lease - NY State and Renter Insurance
Always check with a lawyer however the option to require renters insurance is there. I have never really heard of laws not allowing a landlord to require renters insurance. That seems counter intuitive to me. Sorry I am not much more of a help.
