Landlord Question and Answer Forum
We had a tenant move out October 2015. The property was vacant until March 2016. I was just contacted by the tenant that moved out in October concerning a utility bill that is for October 2015 to March 2016. In short, when the tenant moved, she did not have the gas bill taken out of her name. Isn't it the tenants responsibility to shut off or switch utilities upon moving? Or are we liable somehow? This same tenant caused significant damage to the property which she did not pay for and left us with a large water bill that we ended up paying because the water was shut off. Our properties are in Missouri.

RE: Gas Bill Utilities
That stinks. I am not sure what the right thing to do is, but if I was the tenant, I would explain what happened to the company who issues the gas. Who ever is using the property should be responsible for that bill. As for the damage, I really hope you had them pay for it!!
