I gave a check for $500 to a landlord for an apt. Decided not to take it. Nothing was written on check as to what it was for but was not posted :non-refundable", Gave notice verbally not to take apt. Landlord will not return check.

If it was a holding deposit, it was not refundable. If it was for the security deposit, then it should be returned. Did you sign a lease?
