Per Texas state law, are we are able to require renters to obtain insurance if we put it in the lease?

It is not required by state law that the tenant has renters insurance but you are allowed, as the landlord to require it your self. If a tenant has trouble or you want to help them find renters insurance you can also check out Texas Fair Plan Policies. They have a list of authorized sellers.
