Landlord Question and Answer Forum
Hello, I would like to know how other landlords feel about a tenant keeping pet rats in cages. My main issue with this is that the tenant kept it hidden for a year, then we had him sign a lease which specifically stated NO RODENTS on the property. Now, 1 year later, we have found that he still has them.

RE: Rats as Pets
Okay, i used to have a tenant who had snakes. I allowed them to keep rats (to feed the snakes) as long as they kept them contained and in a certain "approved" area of the house. It depends on the landlord. I also required an additional fee for the rats because if they got loose and chewed wiring or harmed the property, i needed to hold them responsible. The fact that you had NO RODENTS in your lease, means they have violated the lease, and did not prove to be trustworthy, i would send a lease violation notice to them.
